About Us
Can you read this? Too many adults cannot!
Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County 501(c)(3) is a not-for-profit
organization that provides a variety of free services to help people
achieve personal goals through literacy. Through a trained corps
of volunteer tutors, it is our mission to foster and enhance family
literacy, assist adults functioning at low levels of literacy, and
further proficiency in English as a second language. It is the goal
of Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County to halt the rising tide
of illiteracy in Sullivan County.
Founded in 1994 by our current Executive Director,
Connie Keller, to combat the problem of illiteracy in Sullivan County,
the Literacy Volunteers program has grown from a handful of tutors
and students to our present demographics of 90 active students,
and 65 active tutors. Accredited again in 2005, Literacy Volunteers
of Sullivan County has proven itself a reliable and worthy institution,
designed to provide individual tutoring for adults, ages 16 and
above, who have been targeted by various assessment tests to further
develop their basic literacy skills.
Literacy Volunteers is located in the Literacy
Center at 63 North Street in Monticello, NY. (Across the street
from the front of the Sullivan County Government Center.) For more
information, please call 845-794-0017 or e-mail us at lvasc@in4web.com.
